DailyPhotos > schmoo  > Portraits > 365 > 365-ish
I thought I gave up on this project but my better judgment, competitive edge, and other kind supporters won me over.

One photo each day, as often as I can keep up with it. I love being nosy and seeing into the lives of others through a daily photo, but I don't think it's fair for me to watch and not participate. So as much as I hate being in front of the lens, here goes!

Last year's project can be found here.

I'm getting restless again. We've talked about going up to Pt. Reyes for a while and we finally did. I was looking to go when the rains were thick and the clouds temperamental, but instead we found blue skies and tons of whale watchers.

The view from there is just gorgeous. It's almost like being in Europe again, and we are so lucky to live in such a state. However, this isn't quite what I am looking for. I'm still working on it, noodling, trying things out, running the numbers.

I came back with one shot so far, and hopefully will have more later.

Catching up in bursts. Some days at the office I can neither keep up the energy that I need or shut my brain off long enough to sleep at night.

Still slowly trying to piece together all the parts of a home. This enormous mirror was on sale at IKEA so I had to get it. I was amazed it fit in the Mini.

(Well, it didn't, but close enough. It got to the house in one piece.)

Trav is great at engineering things to "just work," even though I don't always have faith in it. I usually have to turn around and hum to myself until he comes and gets me.

There's nothing like the beautiful artwork that you can find in San Francisco. As much as I like window shopping online, nothing beats an independently-owned boutique in a quirky neighborhood.

I saw this necklace a week or so ago in a small shop in the Mission and haven't stopped thinking about it since. The gingko tree always reminds me of my mom, as gingkos have a tie in with many Asian cultures. The leaves are so beautiful, too, and who can top a tree that's been around since the dinosaurs? That's cool!

Trav bought this for me today and it's still probably one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Three shimmery leaves cascading off the chain, handcrafted with the artist's initials on the clasp.

I'm trying Don's castoff Nook, since it's been sitting lonely in the office for several weeks. I can't bear to see something just looking abandoned!

It's a cool device, even though I am not sure that I'm in the market for toy like this. I have plenty of books physically sitting on my desk that I need to get through, so I have no immediate use for something like this, but it's fun. The biggest nit I have with the Nook is that it's sloooooooow. So slow, in fact, that it's a cinch to grab the camera and take a shot while the e-ink is still in the process of flickering between pages.

The fun never ends! Today was a long day coming. A couple of Trav's friends from Baltimore flew in for the Ravens/Raiders game in Oakland. We all met up in SF and took the train over. Three out of four of us were wearing vibrant purple Ravens shirts... and why not? But... dude, Raiders fans are something special.

I am not a fanatic about sports but I like seeing our old home team win. And I admit it was really, truly awesome to see the Ravens here in California. It was like an old friend visiting. But the home team (really, their fans) were anything but welcoming and were definitely not good sportsmen about it.

I've been to a Ravens game back home where the visiting team kicked our butts, and I never witnessed such piss poor manners and behavior as I saw in Oakland. People didn't threaten fans of the opposing team. They didn't throw things at them for having the audacity to exist.

I didn't care either way about the Oakland Raiders before, but it's official now that they are NOT on my list of favorite things.

... THE RAVENS ARE GOING TO THE PLAYOFFS!

This is kind of a funny shot to me because Derin's son has not seen a lot of digital cameras in his 15 months. He was fascinated by the buttons and especially when I would take videos of him and then show him on the LCD. I tried to get a photo of him while he was snuggled in my lap and while he appeared impressed with the results, they were a little, uhhhh, out of focus.

Kids are great audiences.

So, I apologize about not filling in the caption sooner, but when I initially uploaded this one, I tried entering it 3x and it failed each time. So I just gave up!

(Yeah I know all two of you were crying with anticipation.)

Anyway, this was the awesome SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills. We stayed here for a night on the way to visiting some good friends who were in the country. What a fun night this was! I didn't know what was furniture/architecture and what was art. At the end it really doesn't matter. Just play with it all.

This is what 400 4x6 prints from Bay Photo look like when they arrive!

Got somethin' in the works...

We finally discovered a fantastic Indian place in CA. It was just about worth the almost-year-long wait.

Of course, southern Indian food means you need clean hands. So out comes the sanitizer.

I've been working on a movie project, and it ain't goin' so well.

Part of the issue is that the clips I'm working with are almost a year old and were shot very poorly. So, garbage in = garbage out. This isn't the amazing work of art that I had in my head since 2008. But it is what it is, and I think that it's good to put these clips to use even if it's not exactly what I planned.

The only thing I ever really want to do in my life is make beautiful things. So it sucks when that fails.

It's nice having an office again, though.

On to the next project...

Happy holidays to everyone!

I read a very touching entry on a SF Bay Area community that I joined, and I admit that as atheist as we are, the holidays still mean something to us because it's the time of year you get to spend with your family.

Of course, neither of us have family anywhere near here and airfare to go back East was prohibitive, so we were on our own. It was a little lonely, but I was very comforted knowing that we are, by far, not the only people like this and we are very fortunate in so many other ways.

We had plans to do another stairway hike around SF, but we got a late start to some cookies we were baking in the morning. And, of course we live 45 minutes away now so it's not so easy to just hop on a Muni line. But we visited the beautiful Moraga steps and, really, the photos you see never do them justice. They are incredible!

Here I was doing my impression of Zach sniffing the breeze. You can see the ocean and smell the rich greenery. I love the smells of northern California.

Moving is a PITA. It all started when we realized that we had less than 24 hours, two people, and one Mini Cooper to move everything we owned out of the 1-bedroom place in the city to our new place in south bay. Even though the majority of our belongings have been in storage for the last 8 months, we somehow accumulated a ton of stuff while in our temporary apartment!

It was with mixed feelings when we got everything (and I do mean everything) out and all together in the garage. Holy poop did I forget how many boxes we had! And we'd sold/tossed most of our stuff back in Maryland before we moved, trying to pare down the last 8 years of our lives together.

It's a slow but sure process, unpacking and dusting and finding new places as we put down real roots for the first time in almost a year. I am so happy to have my snowman mug back (the kettle stayed with me, of course).

This mug was bought as a gift a few years ago in Baltimore, and just before I wrapped it up I had realized that I'd already bought the person a present. (It was one of those crazy holiday seasons) So I ended up keeping it, and I never regretted it because this dude makes me smile.

Even though it's probably better fulled with milky sweet hot chocolate and marshmallows, I don't eat sugar so tea is always welcome.

Sorry to anyone around me, but moving and trying to buy furniture is the only thing on my mind these days. I know it gets annoying.

I fell behind on the Dailies again, but we've been in the process of moving and for a few days I didn't even know where my camera was. I'm finally set up (more or less) and my office is so much nicer than any office I've ever had before. I can't wait until I have bookshelves and a reading chair so my nest can be complete! And then maybe I can catch up on this year-long backlog of photos and movies I need to edit. :D

Anyway, this photo was from our company holiday party. It was quite unlike any other company holiday party I've ever been to, mostly because I actually wanted to go to this one. There were gingerbread houses in all categories of social acceptance, happy children, dogs with sweaters, dogs eating things they shouldn't eat, candy cane mojitos (with cilantro!) and of course, a most amazing spread of food prepared by our most amazing chef.

I daresay it was a pretty good time.

I always say that I see my Aussie friend more than I see my friends who live in-town!

This is still pretty true. This weekend a friend and colleague Devbobo was staying with us, kind of a "last hurrah" of our awesomely located apartment in San Francisco.

The weather this weekend was terrible: totally rainy and soggy and just plain miserable ,but since he dragged all of his gear from Oz, I insisted that he at least take it out once to use it. I doubt any shots came out spectacularly (at least for me) but he has a knack of whipping the most amazing landscapes out of practically nothing because he is patient and methodical about his workflow.

This shot is pretty much just a "three Smuggies" kind of thing at some fort just south of the Golden Gate Bridge.
