365 self portraits. Can I actually do it? Inspired by many others, I decided to give my creativity a kick in the pants with a Daily Photo project. With life happening too fast, quite often I lose the spark that drives me to pick up the camera. Hopefully I can maintain not only this project, but the ability to develop more as a photographer. Ideally, the majority of these will be self-portraits to help me get over my image complex and to document the most important, memorable moments of each day.

My rules:
1. At least part of myself in each shot. Every 24 hours.
2. EXIF data pulls rank. I travel and can't always upload on a timely matter, but the timestamp is as the timestamp does...
3. Try to document the dominant activity/event of the day. This is a journal-type project for me, too.
4. Having help is OK. While I always set up the shot myself, occasionally the location requires having someone else hit the shutter for me.

This is a backup image, since I skimp on Dailies so much during the week. I was trying to take some GQ shots of Trav during a short sunspot, and he thought my shadow was so cute.

Here's what I have to say to that! :D

Although it still rained cats and dogs today, I managed to get a quick pic of my new toy during a 2-minute break in the clouds. The weather and the light were fickle but beautiful this afternoon in Canton. I feel like I'm in Europe again... it was so strange to see blue sky after a week of constant rain!

Putting the camera low is a good thing for car photography, so I hear, but this wasn't so much me trying to make my Mini look more "aggressive" as it was my lack of a tripod.

I need to start getting better about taking dailies. Part of it has been because I stopped carrying my camera around with me, which isn't always a good thing. School is almost over (for good, I'm approved for graduation), and while I have many other things to keep me busy I do hope that I'll be able to focus on being more creative and following my heart.

This is a really awful photo but other than about 10 minutes of sun this morning we had terrible weather. I could not document the reason why I was so sad about my old VW Jetta yesterday because.

1. Well, the light sucked.

2. BGE is putting in a new telephone pole or something on my street and they have trucks parked all over the place. I park my car in my driveway, and I'm far too shy to take photos of myself draped over the hood with a dozen strange men watching me.

I love this car, bonnet stripes and butte-warmers and all! I smile whenever I see it. I smile whenever I am thinking about it. And of course I smile whenever I'm driving it. One way I decided to look at it was this: if I'm fed up with the amount of traffic that's in the Baltimore/DC area, why not just make traffic more fun?

Having had this car for a little over 24 hours now (unfortunately about 6 of that was spent asleep), I'm still getting used to how it handles. And how! This little thing takes corners so well, and since I have the S-series in a manual shift (of course) I am just amazed at how tight and responsive it is. Unlike my 8-year old, 165k-mile VW Jetta Wolfsburg, the engine doesn't whine. It purrs. We are going to have so much fun together...

Welcome to 6th gear.

I look happy in this photo from this morning but I really was not. I love my Vee Dub, and we've been through so many trips and so many hard times (and so many good ones). The only place we haven't been together was across the country, and that's something that I had really hoped to do, and very sorely regret...

It's been a while since I took a photo of Zach. He's still there, following me around the house, sleeping on his hairy doggy bed under my desk when I work, and zonking out in the sun when the afternoon light hits the living room rug.

He hates my hairdryer. But that's OK since he's pretty tolerant about the vacuum.

(Only one of those hands is mine, and the leg certainly is not!)

Heading home, filling the tank, and of course washing the windows.

I had a fantastic weekend. It wasn't like that to start and I was in a slump for a while, wishing I was experiencing more in more exotic places. But a wonderful friend said to me: "It's important to have a great time no matter where you are and what you do."

He's right. And I'm lucky enough to be married to this friend. I think I'll keep him.

We're in coal country, PA, this weekend. I'm more and more fascinated with the little towns and the people who are in this part of the country. Even though none of this scenery is surprising to me, I'm starting to appreciate that the flavor and the color of this area as unique in and of itself.

All week I've been mistyping "UE weekend" as "EU weekend" and I wish it really was "EU UE," or something along those lines. ;)

I'm so tired, none of this is making any sense. My hair and my clothes smell like wood smoke, which is not at all a bad thing. This is me (again) at the Lauraville coal breakers, sitting on a block of wood and ruining my new jeans with coal dust and mud.

Momma needs new shoes!

We're a Fluevog family, now. I've always loved John Fluevog shoes but with the exception of one pair of lovely boots, I never let myself really cave. Funny how I justify it so easily now that I'm part of the SmugMug family. As per JF's ordering procedures, I ordered these Supervogs online, but got a phone call from the store in NYC when they shipped. I had a talk with the really nice sales girl for a while about their customer service and the company.

JF has so many similarities to SmugMug. They are a small company, but care passionately about their work. They only employ people who are as nuts as they are about the product. And I could tell this right off the bat, before I brought it up in our conversation and we compared notes.

Thanks JF, for proving that it works. And I love my new shoes, even though I need to break them in.

Trav models his Future Angels on the right. I really like how you can see the classic Baltimore row houses in the reflection!

Life is busy but good. Today I cleared up some much-needed-to-be-done homework in the morning and then we had lunch at Liquid Earth. The food is good, but the service is always very slow. OK if you have no where you really need to be, I suppose, but I do and I did.

The people sitting at the counter behind me really amused me, which is why I had Trav switch seats with me to take this Daily Photo. Overalls! How often do you see someone wearing honest-to-goodness overalls these days? And a plaid shirt? I guess Liquid Earth is just that kinda place. It certainly is the most, uh, political place I've ever eaten, that's for sure.

Shortly after this photo I picked up new earrings up the street. I have been wearing the same BCRs for over two years, mostly out of forgetfulness and because they are so low-maintenance. You can see them here, and I think it'll be the last time I wear them for a while. It amuses me that I went all the way to San Francisco to find unique jewelry... and I found exactly what I wanted in Baltimore.

(I'm not sure that analogy will always hold up.)

Don't worry, be happy.

I took my one weekend day off and really took off to do something I haven't done in ages: go somewhere I shouldn't. We had a fantastic time today driving a few hours to take photos of an old steel mill and I have even more photos to process, now.

Perfect weather, perfect scenery and perfect Oatmeal Stout (afterwards) aside, none of my self-portraits really came out. This one was an attempt of me documenting just how important cargo pants are when you're exploring. I have my gloves, CF cards, extra battery, LED flashlight and point and shoot camera in my pants, as well this really awesome cell phone pouch thing I picked up on my road trip. It's actually some sort of PDA holder by Lowepro but I love it because it comes with a carabiner and the top closes with a magnet. It fits the iPhone like they were made for each other.

Never be without your iPhone because texting your buddies while shooting is very nearly as good as them being there with you. :)

The big day. Today I was shooting a wedding and it was quite a learning experience with lighting and speed! It was quite a lovely one, too, with the perfect amount of pressure... meaning there was barely any. :) Trav was my assistant and second shooter, and I have quite a few photos to go through in the next week.

This shot was taken by the food bar. My husband and I haven't eaten animal products in almost a year, but I chomped down a slice of wonderfully pungent cheese from the cheese tray. The look on his face was priceless. :D

A week has gone by without any Dailies. Life seems incredibly dull after I'm back home, as it's back to my desk and dishes and vacuuming and grocery shopping.

The little blue flashlight I keep on the zipper of my jacket has become a talisman of all my photography travels. I never need to use it at home, but I know it's there when might.

Here I was playing around with some more off-camera lighting, dragging the shutter and taking the cars on the street behind me into account.

It's time to check out and roll out from Moab. What a great shootout and I have had the most exciting two weeks I could have imagined! I learned a lot, maybe not necessarily about photography but certainly about life, patience, and eating well on the road.

This is a side view mirror shot from one fo the last times we drove from Red Cliffs Lodge to downtown Moab. Such stunning red cliffs and I never really thought to photograph them. This doesn't do them justice.

Things are winding down. The morning shoot was at Landscape Arch, which was OK. I've not yet seen a great sunrise in Utah, and it's a little disappointing. The morning was OK once the sun cleared the horizon again, so I took a moment to preserve our buttes as we watched the soft light hit the rocks.
