schmoo > My connecting flight to Amsterdam was delayed so long that the airline put me on the Amtrak to get to Newark on time. I had to wait for an hour and a half in the freezing rain with all of my gear. Not a good way to start. And the train was late, I had to still check my bag and go through security at the other end, so I missed my flight anyway. By the time I did get to Amsterdam, boy, was I in a mood...
schmoo > ... however it's hard to stay mopey and tired around Ivar. I'd arrived first thing in the morning so we had the whole day in front of us! He pulled out two bikes from his shed and after a few hilarious mishaps we were on our way to downtown Utrecht.
schmoo > Even on a Tuesday afternoon, the streets are hopping. What a beautiful town!
schmoo > I forget what this building is. There were lots of pretty historic buildings.
schmoo > A crazy guy screaming about something in Dutch. You can find crazies all over the world.
schmoo > More buildings in the warm sunlight.
schmoo > The church tower is beautiful. At this point of the day I whipped out the fisheye lens, lent it to Ivar and it was all over from there... ;)
schmoo > Lots of cats and dogs taking over the restaurants. I loved how they seemed to own the place!
schmoo > Great photo ops at every turn
schmoo > Some streets were quieter than most
schmoo > During a trip to the central train station to hit the bank, I saw these super-unhealthy automat thingies that are quite popular, apparently. They sell mostly artery-clogging fried food, and I was amused that the guy on the left was giving me a really defensive, mean stare just as I took this shot.
schmoo > Nice.
schmoo > Canals and bikes. What else do you need?
schmoo > Good friends, that's for sure!
schmoo > I'd forgotten up until this point that the Netherlands are known for the wooden shoes. I was a little out of it. Tourism has made wooden shoes into fuzzy slippers.
