365 self portraits. Can I actually do it? Inspired by many others, I decided to give my creativity a kick in the pants with a Daily Photo project. With life happening too fast, quite often I lose the spark that drives me to pick up the camera. Hopefully I can maintain not only this project, but the ability to develop more as a photographer. Ideally, the majority of these will be self-portraits to help me get over my image complex and to document the most important, memorable moments of each day.

My rules:
1. At least part of myself in each shot. Every 24 hours.
2. EXIF data pulls rank. I travel and can't always upload on a timely matter, but the timestamp is as the timestamp does...
3. Try to document the dominant activity/event of the day. This is a journal-type project for me, too.
4. Having help is OK. While I always set up the shot myself, occasionally the location requires having someone else hit the shutter for me.

My current 365 Project gallery is here!

Dan and April took us on a very long hike today. Under the beating sun we walked, stumbled, tripped, and hopped across rocks for 5.62 miles to end up amongst a cluster of sinking old houses and a stinky marsh. It doesn't sound like a lot but given the terrain it was quite a trip. The birds, the bugs, the decay, slippery mud and the racing trains were a nice change from being shut indoors most of the week.

Top that off with excellent Thai food at Amarin in Mountain View and you have a pretty good day. Thanks guys, it was fantastic! :)

To continue a great weekend that was kicked off by my birthday we drove up the coast all the way to Oregon to try to find some giant redwoods. And we did! I didn't really get a lot of decent photos because it's very difficult to do something new with those things, but it was still breathtaking and new and we had a fantastic time. I daresay Zach did, too, even though he hates actually being in the car. (The beaches make up for it.)

There's a lotta hippies north of wine country, and I don't blame them. It's gorgeous there. And quiet.

For my 30th birthday all I wanted was some quiet downtime with Trav, maybe with a little shooting going on. And I got it. The very best part of it was having Indian takeaway in a sort of picnic up on the Marin Headlands while we waited for the sunset. It was really nice, and so funny because it was so windy the rice kept blowing off our forks. The food was also stone cold after a very short while, and we couldn't feel our fingers. But dammit we weren't going to give in and sit in the car!

I don't think I got any decent shots, but at least I got to go out and get re-acquainted with my tripod. We also got to chat with a bunch of other photographers (some of them Smuggers!) so it was an extra-nice birthday.

Today was a big day for me. I was shooting a very awesome model who goes by Mickey around San Francisco. I'm new to models and my attempts in the past have been... OK. But I was really happy about getting the chance to work with someone who is experienced and confident. Plus when he's famous I can say "Hey! I knew him way back when!" :D

I cheated and Trav actually took this photo of us reviewing shots in Buena Vista Park. My husband is the best assistant I could ever ask for. Annie Leibovitz might have 27 helpers but Trav does at least the work of 3. I certainly don't mean to be comparing myself to someone as accomplished as Annie Leibovitz but really, I could not ask for a more intuitive partner!

Here's his gallery and a couple of posts I made on Dgrin.

Monday, Monday, Monday! Today I drove down to work from -- gasp! -- the office. I haven't worked in an office in almost a year and because of this (and also because of the company I work for) I was kind of excited. I got one of the spare Sorcerer offices, probably Lee's spot when he's out here. But if that's true, Lee why do you have a copy of Allure magazine on your desk?

Anyway, it's been busy this week which is a good thing for us. That night we had our very first SMUGs meeting which is good stuff for Pro photographers. Of course, our new Artist in Residences were doing presentations and whatnot but I missed the whole thing since I had to work. But it sounded like it was a great success if the chatter and laughter from the main room meant anything!

It's great to get some face time in with the people I "see" every day online.

Sorry, I have not been taking daily photos very much due to being busy and just basically not having any energy or creativity. We're adjusting finally to living out on the West Coast, although many things still crop up and surprise us every now and then! One thing both of us miss the most is our good friend, Matt. But also what Matt usually comes bundled with, and that is a great exploring adventure in a luscious abandoned building.

There aren't that many abandonments out here, although they are around if you can accept that they are a little different. I've scouted this particular building before with no luck, but maybe we'll get back into the swing of things once our schedule frees up. Or we fly Matt out here, whichever comes first. :D

Again I've been spotty with Dailies. I try to get out and explore and experience my new city but even if I managed to do or find something cool, I'm unable to put it into a decent frame of reference through the lens. :\

Wednesdays I have free, so off we went to explore the famous Fisherman's Wharf. I've never been there before, even in my half dozen or so visits to the city before we moved here. Even mid-week, the place was packed. I really don't care for tourists or crowds, but it was still reasonably fun. that is, until I got hungry and my feet got sore. I love that we can access most parts of the city with a simple Muni ride, living only 1/2 block from the Muni station and countless bus stops. And the weather is so often so perfect and sunny.

I was worried about getting a tan actually, but I figured that I'm just not used to being in the sun so much.

You can't tell this shot was taken at the Wharf, and maybe that's a good thing.

This is a wonderful city and I love it but I am a little homesick for my friends and family, I admit.

After work I had an inkling to visit Japan Town. We took the muni/bus there and it was a great experience, as was the chain of plazas that make up that part of town. We had a strangely filling dinner at a very crowded restaurant (a good sign!), shopping around some bookstores, etc, but only after taking a cheezy tourist photo here.

Japan was great. We should go back as soon as we can.

Sunday! A time to get into my (neglected) car and drive up the coast and see what we find. We made up to Jenner, pretty much, even though the weather was rainy and foggy and wet. Just like the last time I'd driven up here, last spring. Oh well. The water was still turquoise and beautiful and I can't get enough of that heady, wet, earthen smell of the eucalyptus trees.

Zach still hates car rides but I think we placated him with great runs on a bunch of beaches with other dogs.

I love everything about this state so far. I just can't get over it, and I can't find enough time to adequately sit down and describe it in words anymore. I can't even focus anymore creatively with my camera because I'm just too busy. And I do regret that.

I miss my stylist, Bethany, back in Baltimore. Although this is an effect of my latent X chromosomes, Ive started to really care about my mop so I wasn't eager to fix something that ain't broke. I mean, it wouldn't have been broke if I didn't move across the country. However after much research and a little luck, I got an appointment with Heather and Hair Candy and I had a really nice time sitting in her chair and getting the gnawing gerbils.

Fornication hair, FTW!

Yes, yet another restaurant. Life really is all about the food!

We walked to the Haight this evening because the weather was gorgeous (duh) and, well, why not? I'm out of shape but SF will certainly kick my butte into gear over the next few months.

I used to love neighborhoods like the Haight. Artists, grunge, the "F off" attitude of the angsty kids and you can find anything you need, off the beaten path. However the older I get the more I realize I just find it dirty, and I'm turning into a germophobe. And by 9 PM I'm very ready for bed!

Oh, about this restaurant: Bia's is a decent little restaurant. Their food was long in coming but was unexpectedly good. The $15 flights of wine were the highlight of our evening. The walk back home through Buena Vista park was breathtaking.

Kasa is the most amazing Indian place. It's not your typical tikka masala, but rather it's Indian street fare, tidied up and presented simply and freshly alongside great Californian wines. What a great find!

I admire Kasa not just for the delicious, unique food but for their approach: Simple, good food, a single powerful idea stripped down to the core and presented in a catchy, friendly, comfortable manner.

They have my vote. And yeah, I'm gonna gain a little weight living so close to all these great restaurants. :)

Saturday. Our first adventure to South Bay to retrieve some of our more important goods that we had had shipped to CA from MD. Primarily our desktops since working on a laptop was... less than ideal.

Our moving service was very good, but I'm starting to worry a little about how much stuff we're keeping in storage while we live here. I knew I'd worry about this, the whole "Well we haven't used this stuff in ____ weeks, why don't we just sell it?" I guess that option would sure beat paying the storage fee.

Such is the price of having a little residential flexibility.

On the bright side we found an amazing Mexican place in the area with fantastic burritos!

In a few hours of free time this afternoon, we tracked down the famous row of Painted Ladies near Alamo Park. I was on a mission to get a classic "Full House" shot for my friend.

#$@$#$@# Bob Saget yeah!

It's been a long time since I've had a chance to work on photos for pleasure, and I'm sorry about that. I have been taking Dailies as I can, but I don't get to post them.

This one was after one of the many evenings we spent walking around our neighborhood. We now live right at the center of the Castro, so central to everything. I really couldn't ask for more in our neighborhood or our new apartment. It's perfect. Best of all we have so much wonderful food within walking distance - pretty much anything we can think of.

I've been acquainted with this great gelato place just two blocks away, next to the Castro theater. They always have seasonal stuff, of course, but tonight the only soy gelato they had was a Scharffen Berger dark chocolate. It wasn't as good as the pumpkin they had a few months ago, but woo-haw! still magnificent. We, like a couple of other patrons, stopped for a second in our busy evening to enjoy the sweet before going home.
